Who can resist the taking into our hearts an abandoned orphan boy, Harry Potter, who seeks to find himself. It is the compassion in us that Rowlings places her hook to draw in millions of readers.
But there is so much more going on deeper in the story line that speaks not only to our eyes, imagination but to our subconscious. The author's use of symbols are identical to what Hitler did with Christian symbols during his rise to power. And "power" - be it by sorcery or witchcraft - is what these seven stories are all about. Human lust for powers that human's by nature do not have. Hitler called his close followers his "diciples". He even used a double broken cross which he made into a symbol of goodness and prosperity. This symbol was already known prior to his coming into power but he put it in black against the white sun in a field of blood red in honor of the National Socialist Party's martyrs (19 of them). He was urged to take his role in Germany as its long- awaited "messiah". The spear that was believed to have been placed into Jesus' side by longinus on the hill of Calvary Hitler had sent to his palace residence. It was believed that who possessed this spear would have power over the world. Hitler also felt that the myth of Jews betraying Germany in ages past was now resurrected into his day. He said the Jews had betrayed Germany and caused Germany to lose the war. Rowlings also uses Christian symbols and twists them to fit her own ends just exactly as Hitler did.
The Harry Potter series has a subtle Creed all its own. He does two powerful things that underly the whole series: 1) the end justifies the means, and 2) evil can be used to bring about good. When these principles are operative in a series, then intrinsic evil is seen as a "good". These principles are put into the minds and subconscious storage of every little child who loves Harry Potter. Of course the most contemporary application of this principle in daily life is the 4500 abortions a day in the U.S. All these abortions are dong for the perceived good of the mother but using intrinsic evil to accomplish the "good". And, of course, abortion is now seen as a "good" as well. It is called "Pro-choice" that sound good. The Harry Potter moral code has infiltered out society and our culture. Yes, abortion was here before Harry came on the scene; but Harry gave a power-banner to abortion that it did not have before. Women today who are having abortions grew up on Harry Potter.
We cannot just have Faith; we must have the gift from the Spirit of "Discernment of spirits." Our spirituality personal and global is based on our ability to discern what kind of spirit is being fed to us in the media, in the books we read and in movies/TV. Without "Discernment of spirits" we are vulnerable to evil with whip cream on it. No matter how good it looks or tastes, it will poison our souls and those of our children.
We all talk in symbols: our words are symbols of what is going on in our minds. We see symbols every where: on foods, on our shoes, on bill boards, on TV. Symbols are seen by our conscious mind and stay in our subconscious mind. Symbols of true good are a cumulative experience of wisdom. But symbols of evil that appear good are a cumulative experience of wrong moral choice. In Harry Potter series there is absolutely a moral code that is convey symbolically to the viewer. That code can undermind the very child's ability to know what is good and what is bad. If evil as a means to good is considered good, then a confusion takes place in the soul of a child. Maybe is is ok to smash my dad's car to get his attention. Attention is good; smashing car is not good, but is ok because the end is to get attention - that is good.
Kids do not think they have much power. They want to have power to change things. But actually they do have power: the oower of prayer. I believe it was said by a saint that "If I have a right lever and fulcrum, I can move the world." God is the fulcrum and prayer is the lever. Kids can move the world. But Harry Potter says to get power with from sorcery and witchcraft. How else can he have any other power source? The Spirit of God is completely absent from Harry Power books. God is no where. Rowlings was a former Catholic. Her religion now is being a "white witch". But there is no such thing as black witch and a white witch. There is no such thing as dark evil and light evil All of evil is evil. All evil is from the "spirit of darkeness" - from the prince of darkness, Satan.
Harry Potter is diametrically opposed to the whole Jude-Christian spirituality and its moral code. In the seminary, we students were told a lot about "custody of the eyes" and "custody of the sense". Harry Potter is opening kids eyes and senses and imagination to symbols, ideas, and images that will have an influence on their growth and development. What we feed them at supper has a direct effect on their bodies. What we feed their minds has a direct effect on their souls. Blessed Pope John Paul II wrote plays. He said that "Drama is the most powerful way to get an idea into the people." Harry Potter is a powrful drama that gets across the moral code of Rowings who has twisted Christian symbols and ideas to fit her own agenda and ends. Her occult ideas and beliefs are a great disorder to our kids' higher faculties.
We as parents are responsible for getting our kids to heaven. They are not responsible for us. But we are for them. Point in fact: a woman went to confession to Padre Pio. He would not give her absolution just yet until she really examined her conscious well. She came back again and told him all she could remember. He still told her to wait. Finally, on the third time, he told her what she was missing in her confession. He said to her that he has a vision of her two deceased children in hell because she never corrected them. So, this teaches us that we commit sin if we do not correct our children and teach them what is right and what is wrong. It also teaches us that our children may suffer if we neglect to teach and correct them. Also, a prophet came to a father of many sons and said this to him as coming from the Lord: "I have this against you: that you no longer correct your sons." As parents, we are really called to bring our children to the Lord. Harry Potter will not bring them closer to God. Harry will take them away from God. Let us be courageous and speak to them a word that will bring them closer to God. I have three sons and three daughters. They truly listen when I tell them what is right or wrong in their lives. They all call me and ask for my counsel. I went to my dad and mom for cousel; now my kids come to me. God planned it that way. David had a hard time with his son, Absolom, who plotted against David. David still loved Absolom and grieved over the loss of his son in battle. David was a great and inspired Psalmist. His parenting skills were not so great. So, let us pray for the help to help our children:
Lord, please give parents the Holy Spirit of Discerment" to shield their children from the subtle evils of Harry Potter Books. Please give us all the Discernment of spirits we need in our lives to know what we see on TV or read or hear fits into Your plan for our salvation. Give us a keen heart and mind to see what is good and what is bad and to teach our children to know the difference between good and bad. Don't let our children be like Adam and Eve who wanted to determine for themselves what was good and what was bad. Now they know the difference; but help our children to not make what is good to be bad and what is bad to be good. Protect our children, O Lord, with Your Spirit of Discernment and Love. IN Your Name. Amen.
