The Big Bang Theory is not disputed by any physicists today. Once formulated by a French priest, it is now accepted scientific knowledge. The Hubbel telescope verifies it as well by telling us the the universe is expanding from a central point in space.
Philosophically, we must look at Aristotle, too, in this quest for ultimate beginnings. Remember it was the Greeks who discovered "atomos" - the smallest particle of matter if divided would no longer be that matter. The Greeks did not come up with electrons and neutrons; but they did come up with atoms without a mircroscope. We can now 3000 years later see atoms in a microscope. Seeing is believing is not always true.
The Art of True Reasoning is Believing. Aristotle has giving us "ontology" - the studay of being.
Aristotle said that what our senses perceive is "ontologically" out there. But our senses cannot get to the exact "being" even of wood unless we were the soul of that wood. We have as immediate knowledge our own being. We can only know completely our own being because we are the soul of our being. Decartes comes up with the absolute obvious when he declares: "I think; therefore I am." Well, Aristotle knew that without a great declaration. But Aristotle's category of "being" also gave him the category of "non-being" or as we know it as "no thing" or simply "nothing".
So, with these categories of "being" and "non being" we have an interesting philosophical proposition:
"Nothing cannot produce something: "non being cannot produce being." Stephen Hawkin says it can produce something. He says that negative energy and positive energy can cancel each other out and produce nothing. He is looking at all reality through the eyes of a equation: a negative 2 and a positive 2 equals 0. What he is doing here is false theophysics [theophysics is the tendency of contemporay physicists to make philosophical-theological answers to questions that equations cannnot intrinsically answer because equations cannot be the total body of knowledge in the universe.]
For example: science can give me my all the vitals of someone I love. Science can help me to know that person in all her womanly characteristics so that I can actually love her more. Science can cause us to know and love someone more. However, science cannot give us love, itself. No equation can clearly show the depth of my knowledge and love of my life by my experience of her over 20 years. No equation can give the quality of her kiss. There are two kinds of knowlege: scientific and spiritual! Equations cannot give us or quantify our spiritual love of another or even give us love for God. But seeing the marvels of the Universe can help us to love God more because of the Beauty of the Universe. But Stephen Hawking says that God does not exist and is not needed to exist because he says something can come from nothing. Aristotle would say that this reasoning is actually a theophysical leap into insanity. Insanity for Aristotle would be believing in a false major premise that leads to a false conclusion. If this is totally believed in, then you have a "delusion" because the person has deceived himself.
Therefore, for Stephen Hawking to hold that nothing can produce something is an insanity - a delusion of the mind. Psychosis is a break from reality. Stephen Hawkin has made that break. There are no physicists today who think that nothing can produce something. But Steven Hakwin believes in spontaneous creation from nothingness to somethingness. What he misses is this point: The Physics can only measure material being. The Study of Physics - without God in the equation - means that Physics according to Hawkin can discover what is beyond the universe...to non-material being...the relm of the Spirit. The scientific method can examin physical matter. It cannot examin what is beyond matter: the existence of God or the existence of our own soul which Aristotle said we have to have to be able to abstract and deduce things by examing essential charaterics and come up with universal definition of things. We can deduce that the Big Band presupposes a Creator because an "expanding universe" absolutely posits the existence of an "Absolute Absolute" before time and space ever began: Someone who existed before any thing came into to being who brought everything into being. If this Divine Transcendant Being did not exist, then nothingness would be the only thing still pervasive. Isness cannot come from nothingness - especially not spontaneously of itself. Without parents, there is no child; and without God there is no universe. What is created presupposes someone prior to Creation. The Big Bang theory is one of Singularity of Creation. All started from one point in the Universe - one point in time and space. And that the Universe is expanding and excellerating at the same time shows that God is directing His own Creation. The Universe according to Physics should be slowing down by gravity...but it is getting faster beyond the laws of Physics..because the Creator is Beyond all Physics. Steven Hawkin's Theo-physics is a rationalization of the Universe..not rational thinking. He is imposing his own atheism on the Cosmological origins of the Universe. Since this position has no possibility of validity, it is one of trying to prove by physics what is totally beyond Physics. God cannot be discovered by Hawkins nihilistic atheisim. God cannot be discovered or proven from Hawkin's Theo-physics because he is looking nothingness to physically bring somethingness into being. And as I said, that is an insane proposition.
Whereas Albert Einstiein believed in the Creator of our Universe. He said: "Science without Faith is blind; Faith without science is lame." So, good science can light up our faith. Albert Einstine's theophysics was correct. Stephen Hawkin's is not. Stephen Hawkin's problem is not scientif; they are philosophical which of course he said "is dead". How interesting that Stephen Hawkin has made a statement that "Philosophy is dead". To make sure that his illogically conclusions are not examined by himself or anyone else, he kills philosophy as a body of knowlege. That is like killing a messenger who brings bad news - thus to make the news go away.
The Universe is not conscious of itself except for humankind who has "Conscious Consciousness". The source of his/her consciousness is the living soul. This spiritual entity has no parts according to Aristotle and cannot fall apart and can live apart from the body and is destined for eternal Beatitude: beholding the Beauty of God forever. Humankind, therefore, has two integral componets: body and soul: the body comes from the Big Bang material but the soul is an absolutely unique and particular spiritual creation by God. Genesis says that man was created form the dust of the earth and then God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: the human soul. These two parts of man were not two natures. Man has only one nature: Human Nature.
The Big Bang Theory states that all matter in the Universe came from one central point - when once there was NOTHING - then in an instant there was EVERYTHING. Only God Intervention and Creation can account from NOTHING becoming SOMETHING. Only God can create something out of nothing BECAUSE NOTHING CANNOT PRODUCE SOMETHING. If you have an empty warenhouse, a fullly computerized 747 will not appear there from nothingness. We could wait for centuries, but this 747 will not come to be unless someone creates it. The Universe is the same thing: emptiness or nothingness cannot of itself produce somethingness.
Therefore, THE BIG BANG not only creates everything there is in the universe, it tells our logical minds that only a CREATOR can do this. God exists. If He does not exist, then we would be as we were before the Big Bang - we would be "no where"! Even Stephen Hawkin said: "Before the Big Bang, there was "no where". Nowhere cannot produce somewhere! Stephen Hawkin's problem is that if there is a God, then there would follow that we have a relationship with God. It is that relationship that Stephen Hawkin wants to avoid. When Stephen Hawkin used to believe in God, he thought of Him as a non-personal God who did not relate to His creation or creatures. But now, Stephen Hawkin has abondoned his belief in God altogether - even if he has to now say that perfect Aristoteleon logic no longer exists either. What Stephen Hawkin is missing is the wholelicity of man - body and soul. No equation can deduce the existence of the humon soul which Aristotle said is a simple entity without parts and could not fall apart and is therefore eternal. No miscroscope or telescope will reveal the existence of our soul because it is not material - is totally spiritual.
Therefore, the scientific method which is a true body of knowlege is not the ony knowlege in the universe, there is philosophy and theology: a lion can see and enjoy a sunset; but only mankind can see a sunselt and marvel at the Glory of God.
Father, You created the whole Universe with a Big Bang and created each one of us with the silent little bang of conception. Your Creation was greater in creating us than creating the whole universe because the Universe cannot love you back as we can. We do love You. Your goodness has overflowed to create us when You did not need to create. You only did so to share Your Life with us. You were perfectly happy alone in the inner life of the Trinity; but You wanted creatures to enjoy life, too. Please help all physicists to see in the Universe a marvelous reflection of Your own Beauty and Goodness and Intelligence and Generosity and Love for us. All this we ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.
Love, Pio
